Overview

Thursday 12th March, 9.30am – 1.30pm

This trainer-led, CPD-accredited course helps healthcare practitioners build confidence in supporting autistic children who have a PDA profile of autism, whether this is formally identified, self-identified or being explored. Many conventional autism approaches can feel unhelpful for PDA children, so we focus on alternative, person-centred ways of working that prioritise trust, flexibility and collaboration.

The course is designed for healthcare practitioners, therapists and counsellors working with PDA young people aged up to 16.

While we do not cover diagnostic procedures in detail, we look at the Practice Guidance published in January 2022 and the experiences of clinicians working in both NHS and private settings. This can be particularly helpful if a child presents in ways that feel difficult to understand or does not respond to traditional interventions, and may support clinicians to consider whether a PDA profile could be a contributing factor.

The session highlights why accurate identification matters and explores how PDA traits may appear within an assessment environment. We discuss common behaviours, share approaches that help build effective, trusting relationships and offer practical ideas for supporting the young people in your care.
