Understanding distressed behaviours through the eyes of someone with lived experience can transform the way we support PDAers. This two-part series combines honest reflection with compassionate insight to help parents, carers, professionals and PDAers themselves make sense of behaviours that arise from overwhelm, regulation challenges and emotional pressure.

In Part 1, we explore core experiences and emotional states that contribute to distressed behaviours — including sensory overload, unexpected demand, emotional expression and what it feels like from the inside out.

Part 2 goes deeper into how these experiences play out in everyday life and relationships, exploring practical reflections, adaptive responses and insight into co-regulation, support strategies and empathy-based approaches that honour autonomy and emotional safety.

Created by the PDA Society with contributions from people with lived experience and professionals in the field.
